Nehru hockey society to help Olympian Peter’s wife

NEW DELHI: As a goodwill gesture, Delhi-based Nehru Hockey Tournament Society said it would present a purse of Rs 2 lakh as financial help to Shanti Mary, wife of triple-Olympian late VJ Peter. Arun Subhashchandra Yadav, president of the society, said in a statement that the 71-year old Shanti, who now lives in Chennai, will be honoured in Delhi on August 29, which is the the National Sports Day.

“VJ Peter was an extra-ordinary hockey player. He represented India in three Olympics (1960, 1964 and 1968) wining a silver, gold and bronze respectively. Since he died a decade ago, his wife Shanti Mary has been struggling to manage her big family. We are happy and dutybound to extend a helping hand to her to live a honourable life”, Yadav said.

Peter, who played for Services, was awarded an Arjuna in 1967. The society will organize an exhibition match on August 29 in his memory.
