Sonepat XI beat Gwalior XI 3-1 in Sahibzada Ajit Singh hockey

LUDHIANA: Sonepat XI scored an easy win 3-1 over Gwalior XI in the first match of the women’s section on Day 4 of the Mahavir Real Estate All India Sahibzada Ajit Singh hockey champion trophy at Olympian Prithipal Singh hockey stadium in Punjab Agricultural University on Saturday.

Sonepat XI scored two field goals and one through penalty corner to move ahead. For Sonepat XI, Reena opened the account for her team in 17th minute of play by scoring a field goal. In 33rd minute, Gwalior XI equalled the score when Kavita sounded the board with the help of a penalty corner.

By half time, the score was 1-1. In the second half of play, Kiran Dahiya of Sonepat scored a field goal in 51st minute of the play, followed by another goal by Neha Goyal in 57th minute.

Neha scored this goal with the help of a penalty corner. Neha Goyal was declared player of the match and won herself prize money of Rs 1,500.

The six-day hockey tourney is being organized by Sports Council of Ludhiana from March 9-14. In this hockey tournament, eight teams from men category and four from women category would be competing against each other for prize money of Rs 4.25 lakh.

In men category, a total of eight teams and four teams from women section would be competing against each other. In other matches, Rail Coach Factory beat Ludhiana XI, 5-1 and Punjab and Sindh Bank beat Young Stars, Chandigarh 6-1 to move ahead in the tournament.
