NEW DELHI: Hockey India, the national body for the national sport, is set earn the wrath of the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
CCI has found Hockey India guilty of anti-competitive practices and abusing its dominant position. It would be asked to split its regulatory and commercial functions.
But unlike the Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI), on whom CCI slapped Rs 52 crore penalty for abusing its dominant position in IPL, Hockey India will be spared the financial burden. BCCI has challenged the order in the appellate tribunal.
The decision against Hockey India has already been taken and the order is to be made public.
Sources said that the CCI has found Hockey India (HI) guilty of abusing its dominant position after it allegedly threatened sanctions against players who took part in World Series Hockey (WSH), promoted by Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), a rival body.
The case pertains to 2011 when a complaint was filed with CCI by a group. The CCI order concurs with the findings of its investigating arm, headed by the director-general.
HI’s stance was seen as anti-competitive.
Sources also said that the CCI may take similar action against the All India Chess Federation (AICF), which has been accused of withholding players registered with it from participating in events organised by other associations.
