The inter-school state-level hockey tournament organised by District Sports Office (DSO) commenced at Fr Agnels Multipurpose School ground on Sunday with 16 matches being played on the inaugural day. Teams in under-14 and under-17 boys and girls are participating in the meet. Mumbai district team, which is represented by Duruelo Convent High School, advanced to the semifinal.

The girls and boys hockey team from host school failed to qualify for the state-level tournament as they lost in the zonal matches conducted in October. The team representing Latur district failed to turn up for the event due to some last minute problem and hence the four teams that were slated to play the matches against them were given a bye. Also, only seven players from the Parbhani district reported for the match and hence the U-17 girls hockey match between Parbhani and Nagpur was cancelled with latter team advancing to the next round.

An official from DSO, who did not wish to be named, said, “So far the matches have been good. The players are playing the game in the right spirit and there have been no yellow or red card issued though two players from the boys U-17 team were issued a green card.”
