Vivek Singh Academy makes visible strides

There is no better way to immortalize a player’s name than bringing kids to ground and make them play the same game.

This is exactly what friends and family members of Vivek Singh in Varanasi are doing for some time now.

Olympian Vivek Singh shone on international scene in the mid 80s before died of cancer in 2004.

The academy started after his name and ran efficiently at his home town Varanasi, is slowly and steadily making progress. The venture was started in 2005, and the academy now has more than sixty boys in the age group of 10,12,14,16 to under 21.

The organizers endeavour to provide them best of coaching,equipment,practice facilities and match experience by sending them to various city and State level tournaments.

This has brought tangiable results.

In 2009 these Academy boys played several tournaments with good results to show. The Under-14 team won the Jhamanlal Sharma tournament held at K.D.Singh Babu stadium in Lucknow. The senior team won the All India Prize Money tournament held at Itwaa.

It is a matter of satisfaction for those behind the effort, that nine players from the academy has been selected to represent the U.P team in the All India KD Singh Babu tournament.

The Academies’ protegees, Neeraj Yadav and Amal Singh have been selected for Under-19 Indian team camp. Chandan Singh, another player from academy, has been selected for India’s Under-18 team which toured Myanmar in 2009.
