Nerul school dominates in football and hockey

Navi Mumbai schools have been winning laurels in various inter-school tournaments. One of them is Nerul-based St Augustines High School which has been dominating in football and hockey.

This year, the school under-17 boys and girls teams have won titles in the taluka-level tourneys while the school teams also finished runners-up in the Nehru Cup. Riding on the performances by Monish Tandel, Sheldon Fernandes, Nikhil Madavi and Ebin Lucas, the school managed to win the taluka-level title with the school quartet even making it to the Thane district team for the inter-district tournament.

Besides, the boys under-16 team also finished runners-up in the Coca Cola Junior Football Championship which was an inter-city tournament organised by the SportzVillage at the Tata Electric Ground in Chembur. The team lost to St Xaviers, Fort via tie-breaker in the final. The team also bagged Ryan inter-school football tournament by defeating the St Allousius 10-3. The same team also won the Thane district football tournament organised by Sports Authority of India at Fatima High School, Ambernath.

The girls under-17 team also faired equally well and won the taluka-level tournament besides being runners-up at the district-level meet conducted by the District Sports Office (DSO).

The U-17, U-15 and the U-14 boys hockey teams were also runners-up at the Nehru Cup while the school students also won medals in the athletic meet conducted by the DSO while the girls under-17 volleyball team emerged champion in the taluka level while the boys team finished runners-up.

Principal of the school Lily Zachariah says, “We encourage our children to participate in sports as much in academics. The management also wants to send our children to play sports at the national and the international level. They have also made a separate division for all the standards which will have two sports periods and will not miss other lectures and practice proficiently for various tournaments.”
