Panakal Auso Raphael, PA Raphael to many, is an qualified Engineer who took up hockey coaching as a passion and produced results. Many of his trainees in the Centre of Excellence, Bangaluru in the early 90s excelled on the national scene. Double World Cup player Sabu Varkey, Olympians Ravi Naicker, Asian Gold medallist Sandeep Somesh are some his illustrious products.
He joined the Sports Authority of India as coach and them worked for a few years as Director, Coaching, SAI-Air India National Hockey Academy in Delhi. He is one of the earliest proponents of modern hockey in India. He was one of the national coaches for the Women’s national team in the late 80s. He moved to Singapore and now lives in Australia.
He was awarded Dronacharya in 2017 in recognition of his lifetime coaching achievements
