The long-standing tradition of Indian hockey stars transitioning from the pitch to the political arena continues, as former celebrated goalkeeper Bharat Kumar Chetri secures a significant victory in the recent West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. He defeated his nearest rival by a huge margin of 21k + votes to enter the Assembly majestically.

The connection between hockey excellence and political service is a story as old as the sport in India. Chetri now joins an elite list of athletes who have successfully navigated the shift from national heroes to elected representatives.

The trend of hockey players entering the political landscape dates back to Jaipal Singh Munda, India’s first Olympic captain. Munda famously contested Indian parliamentary elections multiple times, securing victories with record-breaking margins on each occasion.

Chetri follows in the footsteps of other icons from various eras, such as Aslam Sher Khan and Pargat Singh, both of whom found success on the electoral field after their storied sporting careers. Present Hockey India president Dilip Kumar Tirkey too is an established politician who had served as member of Parliament twice.

Bharat Chhetri, who served as the captain during the London Olympics, is widely regarded as one of the most dependable goalkeepers in the history of the national team. His most iconic moment remains the 2010 Commonwealth Games semi-final against England. In a high-stakes penalty shootout, Chhetri made a decisive save that secured a 5-4 victory for India. At the time, his performance was hailed as saving the hopes of millions of fans. Years later, he has managed to capture that same public trust at the ballot box.

Once Bharat Chetri almost announced retirement and started playing in the Malaysian Hockey League. However, due to player rebellion during the 2010 World Cup and after, saw him recalled.  He grabbed the opportunity with both hands, went on to lead India at the London Olympics, thus becoming the first goalkeeper to lead any Indian Olympic team.

The Election Results

Trading his hockey pads for a seat in the Legislative Assembly, Chetri won the election in his home state by a substantial margin.
