India 6-1 South Africa
Six goals. One emphatic statement. India go top of the pool . And, it is the by far the biggest win ever at the ongoing World Cup
The Indian women went a little go-ga over African champions South Africa in Amsterdam, producing their biggest score of the tournament so far with a thumping 6-1 victory in their Women’s Hockey World Cup campaign.
It was a performance that combined attacking efficiency with defensive discipline, as India struck three times in each half to overwhelm the continental champions. The massive win has also propelled India to the top of their pool, ahead of China on goal difference. India now have a +5 goal difference, compared with China’s +3.
Way to go, India!

India’s goal rush began with Sunelita Toppo, who opened the scoring to give India an early advantage. The Indian attack then gathered momentum, with Navneet Kaur doubling the lead before Sushila Chanu made it 3-0.
India did not take their foot off the pedal after the interval. Deepika added the fourth, followed by Lalremsiami, who made it 5-0. Sakshi Rana completed India’s six-goal haul as the Indian attack continued to find openings in the South African defence.
South Africa eventually reduced the deficit with a late goal, but by then India had established an unassailable advantage. The final scoreline read 6-1, giving India a spectacular boost in their World Cup campaign.
The result, however, does not fully reflect the valiant fight put up by the African champions. South Africa repeatedly threatened through solo runs and came close on several occasions. Their forwards showed considerable enterprise, but India’s defensive organisation ensured that they were rarely given the elbow room needed to convert those opportunities.
India’s defenders stood firm, while both goalkeepers — Savita and Bichu Devi — played their part in keeping the South African forwards at bay. Their interventions denied South Africa the opportunity to turn several promising moves into goals.

At the other end, India were clinical. Six different players found the net, underlining the depth of their attacking resources and the variety of threats they can pose. The spread of goals across the team will be particularly encouraging for the coaching staff as the tournament moves into a more demanding phase.
The victory also carries considerable significance in the context of the pool standings. India’s earlier 2-2 draw against higher-ranked China had already offered signs that the team was ready to challenge strongly at this World Cup. The 6-1 demolition of South Africa has now converted that promise into a powerful statement.
India sit at the summit on goal difference, with China next at +3. The margin could prove important as the pool race develops.
Most importantly, India have shown that they can combine attacking flair with defensive resilience. They scored freely, defended resolutely and weathered the African champions’ spirited challenge.
From a hard-fought draw against China to a six-goal performance against South Africa, India’s World Cup campaign is gathering momentum.
The message from Amsterdam is clear: India have arrived, and they mean business. Way to go, India!
