BHOPAL, India: The eagerly anticipated U-18 hockey bilateral International Series (BIS) series between India and Australia began with high drama and palpable tension at the SAI Central Centre in Bhopal. In two thrilling openers that served as crucial preparation for the upcoming U-18 Asia Cup, both Indian junior teams showcased immense talent only to be undone by critical lapses in concentration during the final moments of their respective matches. The Indian Women’s U-18 team suffered a crushing collapse to lose 4-3, while the Indian Men’s U-18 team secured a 2-2 draw after conceding a last-minute equalizer.
Last-Six-Minute Collapse Doom Women’s Victory
For the Indian Women’s U-18 side, the series opener was a masterclass in controlled hockey for 50 minutes, followed by a bewildering six-minute defensive meltdown. Playing against a highly physical Australian unit, the Indian girls found their rhythm and dominated significant portions of the game.
The scoring began in the 21st minute when Australia’s K. Aurora broke the deadlock. However, India responded immediately, with Diya capitalizing on a defensive error just a minute later to restore parity. The second half saw India take control. Forward Ekka Kiran produced a moment of magic in the 42nd minute to put India ahead 2-1. When India’s leader, Sweety Kujur, clinical converted a goal in the 48th minute, a famous victory over the formidable Australians seemed guaranteed.
But the final quarter turned into a nightmare. In the 54th minute, Australia’s offensive pressure finally cracked the Indian defense. Mia Klimpsch scored to reduce the deficit, followed by a lightning-fast equalizer from Stella Bartholomeusz. A minute later, in the 55th minute, Stella Bartholomeusz struck again, completing a brace and sealing a dramatic 4-3 victory for Australia, leaving the home side utterly stunned.
Boys Settle for Draw After Last-Minute Equalizer
The Indian Men’s U-18 team also experienced a similar sense of frustration, although they did better to secure a point. Facing a powerhouse Australian side, the Indian boys showed excellent match temperament after falling behind early.
Australia struck first with Johnstone scoring in just the 2nd minute, catching the Indian defense napping. India rallied quickly, and Akashdeep displayed superb skill in the 11th minute to level the score at 1-1. The game became a tactical battle until Prakash Toppo capitalized on a loose ball in the circle in the 45th minute, powering a shot home to give India a 2-1 lead.
As the clock ticked down toward the final whistle, India looked set to hold on for a crucial win. However, in the very last minute of regulation time (60′), a defensive lapse allowed Australia’s Franky to find space and slot home the equalizer, securing a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
Crucial Lessons Learned Ahead of Asia Cup
While the final results were disappointing for the home side, the performance of both Indian teams—Shortlisted based on the Sub Junior Nationals—proved they have the ability to compete against the best. These openers served as a vital preparatory assignment ahead of the U-18 Asia Cup 2026 in Kakamigahara, Japan. The ability to close out games and maintain defensive discipline in the final quarter will undoubtedly be the focus for Coaches Sardar Singh and Rani as the series continues in Bhopal.
