BHOPAL, 14th May 2026: In what is being hailed as the ideal preparatory blueprint for a major assignment, Hockey India has pulled out all the stops to ensure the Indian Men’s and Women’s U-18 teams are perfectly primed for the forthcoming U-18 Asia Cup. Leaving nothing to chance, Hockey India has arranged a high-octane, four-match home series against one of the world’s undisputed hockey powerhouses, Australia.

The series is set to take place at the Udhav Das Mehta (Bhai Ji) SAI Central Centre in Bhopal from 15th to 20th May. For the young Indian squads, this exposure tour represents the gold standard of preparation. Facing a formidable opponent like Australia just days before the marquee U-18 Asia Cup—scheduled to begin on 29th May in Kakamigahara, Japan—provides the ultimate environment to test mettle, sharpen tactical awareness, and build crucial match temperament. There is perhaps no greater way to prepare for a continental championship than by engaging the very best in the world on home turf.

Shortlisted based on their standout performances in the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior National Championship 2026, the young players have undergone intensive training at a month-long National Coaching Camp at SAI Bhopal. Under the astute guidance of two of India’s most iconic former captains, Sardar Singh (Men’s Coach) and Rani (Women’s Coach), the camp has been instrumental in uniting top talents from across the country into cohesive units for the very first time.

Speaking at a press conference in Bhopal ahead of the opener, Men’s Coach Sardar Singh lauded the strategic initiative to focus on this age group. “We have been working on small technical details and strengthening their basics because, in modern hockey, even the smallest aspects make a huge difference,” Singh stated. “This series against Australia will be a great test for the team. If we continue to invest in and develop these young players properly, Indian hockey can benefit immensely over the next decade.

Echoing the sentiment regarding the unparalleled nature of this preparation, Women’s Coach Rani highlighted the historic significance of the series. “It has never happened before that we have had the opportunity to play against a team like Australia in this age group, so this is a massive exposure opportunity for these girls,” she said. Rani noted that beyond technical training, a key focus has been molding players from diverse backgrounds into representing India as one cohesive team, while also meticulously managing workload to ensure an injury-free squad for the Asia Cup.

The visiting Australian coaches also expressed their eagerness for the challenge. Dan Mitchell, Australia U-18 Men’s Coach, acknowledged the admiration for the Indian style of hockey, predicting a “real test” for his side. Similarly, Matt Cook, Australia U-18 Women’s Coach, viewed the tour as a vital learning experience regarding international travel and varying conditions, hoping this marks the start of a stronger, long-term competitive relationship between the two nations.

As the Indian colts and eves gear up for this critical assignment in Japan, this high-profile engagement against Australia is undoubtedly the right pathway to continental glory.
