Born on 14th April 1960, Varanasi's Md. Shahid is a hockey player extraordinaire. Known for his artistic game, Shahid was product of Lucknow Sports Hostel, which produced numerous players. He made his first international appearance when took part in the 1979 Esanda World Cup in 1979. The 19-year old did not look back since then. He career went on colourfully for next one decade. After winning gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, he went on to play two more Olympics. He led India for the 1986 World Cup and Asian Games.
He joined Indian Railways and played for them for about two decades, giving a name for the team.
He was awarded Arjuna in 1980 and Padamshree a year later.
He breathed his last on 21st July 2016 after being hospitalized for treatment at Gurgon, near Delhi.
