Born on 6th Feb.1936 in Bannu (now in Pakistan), lanky defender Jhaman Lal Sharma came in to prominence in 1955 when he captained the Bijnor District Hockey Association in various local tournaments. He represented United Province hockey team at the Senior Nationals Championships. He was first selected for India in 1959 East Africa tour. He won silver at the 1960 Olympics and the same metal hue at the 1958 Asian Games too. After playing career he and KD Singh Babu worked together in the UP Sports Deptt to promote hockey by creating infrastructure, coaching with modern tools and helping helpless.
Jhamanlal Sharma was also manager and selector, and accompanied Indian men's national team for many tours and tournaments. He was awarded Laxman Award by UP govt in 1974 and top civilian award Padamshree by Govt of India in 1989.
He breathed his last on 25th Aug.2007.
