Rani Rampal is contemporary hockey's mascot. She is presently the captain of the national women's team. Born in Shahbad, near Kurukshetra in Haryana, Rani Rampal made her senior international debut in 2008 at the Olympic Qualifier, Kazan, Russia. She was spotted by famous Dronacharya award winning coach Baldev Singh, who trained her in his Shahbad Hockey Academy. It was Olympic gold medallist and coach MK Kaushik, who gave her international debut in Kazan. Since them for the eleven years, she has been in the team steering for all the success. Was declared Best Player of the 2010 World Cup & 2013 Jr World Cup, Rani has been honoured with 'Arjuna', a sports award by the Govt of India in 2016 and it was followed by the top civilian award, Padamshree. Hockey India has recommended her for prestigious Khel Ratna in June 2020. If the Govt of India agrees to, then she will only be the third hockey player, including men, to get the honour.
Rani has an impressive participatory record: Figured in the Rio Olympics; Hockey World League Round twice (2015 & 2017); Commonwealth Games thrice (2010, 2014 & 2018); Asia Cup thrice (2009, 2013 & 2017); Asian Games thrice (2010, 2014 & 2018) and the World Cup twice (2010 & 2018), besides many AHF and invitational events.She first joined Indian Railways. Now, working with Sports Authority of India as coach. She lives in Shahbad, Haryana. She is a forward, often striking goals in vital matches.
