Born on 2nd Dec.1990, Karnataka's SK Uthappa emerged as a play maker in the mid 2010s and became a double Olympian.
SK UTHAPPA was part of the Indian men's National hockey teams that took part at the Olympics (2012 & 2016); Asia Cup (2013, 2017); Hockey World League Tier 4 (Finals) (2014, 2017), Hockey World League Tier 3 (Round 3) (2013, 2015, 2017) & Champions Trophy THRICE (2012, 2014 & 2016).
He however missed out narrowly for Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and World Cup. SK UTHAPPA's entry into the national squad did not come without a lot of hard work. Hailing from Kodagu in Coorg district of Karnataka, Uthappa’s picking up hockey was not a surprise, given that the region has always been a rich nursery for the sport in India. However, having to move away from his home to Bangalore was a little difficult for the youngster. Having been selected for a special scholarship after being selected during a talent hunt by the Sports Authority of India at the age of 14 in 2005, he was expected to join the SAI Centre for Excellence in Bangalore. However, the love for the game helped Uthappa pursue the sport. His talent evident, he was soon leading the Karnataka team in age group tournaments across the country, leading them to the under-20 national championships title in 2010. But he actually came into the limelight only last year, when he was named Player of the Tournament at the senior national championships in Bhopal. His prowess on the field had helped Karnataka reach the final, for the first time the state had managed to do so. His performances helped him get into the national probables for the training camp. After that, it was all about hard work to impress coach Michael Nobbs, something the youngster managed to do. He was in the team for the Asian Champions Trophy, the Olympic qualifiers, the four-nation test event in London and the Azlan Shah tournament, all in 2012 before selected for the London Olympics. And then he had a roller coaster ride.
