Born on 17th August 1992, Khandranghan Kothajit Singh hails from Basihkhong village in eastern Imphal.
KOTHAJIT SINGH was part of the Indian men's National hockey team that took part at the Olympics (2016); World Cups (2014, 2018); Asian Games (2014); Commmonwealth Games (2014, 2018); Asia Cup (2013); Hockey World League Tier 4 (Finals) THRICE (2014, 2015, 2017), Hockey World League Tier 3 (Round 3) (2013, 2017) & Champions Trophy THRICE (2012, 2014, 2016).
Picking up the sport, however, was not difficult for Kothajit, even though football is far more popular in Manipur. Born in a family of hockey players, there was never any other choice. His entire family has played hockey – both his parents played for Manipur, two of his brothers play for Army XI while one is employed with ONGC. In fact, even his house in Imphal is right next to the hockey stadium. Also, the fact that there were far too few hockey players in Manipur meant competition was less but it also did not help him grow. To realize the dreams of his entire family, Kothajit moved out to the SAI Centre in Lucknow, joining there in 2006 and remaining with them till he got a scholarship from IOC. He played for Manipur in the senior national championships, and was impressive enough to make it to the 48 probables for the national camp despite his team going out in the early stages itself. He impressed coach Nobbs enough to earn an India cap during the 2012 test series against South Africa before the Olympic qualifiers, and then made it to the final 18 for the qualifiers itself. Then there was no stopping him, as his brief participation record in the opening paras would vouchsafe.
