Born on 5th Oct.1944, Sunita Chandra, later Sunita Puri, studied at St. Thomas High School in Delhi. She excelled volleyball, basketball, athletics and hockey. She played Series against Japan and Sri Lanka, and captained Indian women's national team for about five years. She also held important position in the now defunct Madhya Pradesh Women Hockey Association. She was awarded in 1966
