Born on 5th April 1945 at Sansarpur in Punjab, Balbir Singh was an able right-half. He played for the Services in the Nationals from 1965 to 1974. He won gold at the 1966 Asian Games, bronze at the 1968 Olympics. His international career was shortly snapped due to knee injury, and then devoted his time for training ASC hockey team. He was also coach of the Indian national team for 1082 Asian Games and Champions Trophy. He was also one of the successful women's national coaches too. Balbir Singh (Services) was honoured with Arjuna award in 1968.  .
