Sardar Singh will lead India for the crucial world cup qualifier starting at Rottardam next fortnight. This is the severe test for his leadership to date.

The all rounder has been in the FIH All Stars team in 2010 and 2011, and has been best of player of Delhi OQ and Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, both in 2012. Like last year, he has got the deserving accolade again now. This fitting tribute to the live-wire all rounder.

The midfielder turned defender has been Player of the Azlan Shah Cup 2010.

Hailing from a small hamlet in Haryana, Sant Nagar, Sardar Singh is an important member of Indian national team for the last four years. The lanky Sikh matured from inside-forward to centre-half, a position he relished for long before asked to defend, as was the case in the 2010 Azlan Shah Cup.

He is the only player to play all the 26 matches in 2008. Under his captaincy, India reached the finals of the Azlan Shah Cup after 12 years’ gap, in 2008.

He scored the winning goal when India won the bronze in 2007 Azlan Shah Cup. After Silver in 2008, his luck with the Azlan Shah Cup continued in 2009 and 2010 as well - with gold.

Haryana government has taken him on its roll as a high-profile Deputy Superintendent of Police in 2008.
