Against the backdrop of ever-improving Malaysian sides, a good match is expected today at Doha. Malaysia need a big margin win over already-qualified-for-the-final India. More so after Pakistan defeated Japan 5-2, despite trailing 1-2 at one point of time, and thus getting over all 10 points.

Since then Malaysia has been on even keel with both India and Pakistan. India lost to Malaysia often on its home soils, especially in Azlan Shah events in the last 5,6 years.

Malaysia also won the bronze in the Asian Games, again via tie-break denying for the first time any medal to Pakistan.

Malaysia was the first Asian power to acquire services of foreign coaches. Terry Walsh of Australia coached Malaysia in the early 90s once it became clear Malaysia had been out of medal contention in both Asia Cup and Asian Games. However, its German Paul Lissek, who nearly resurrected Malaysian hockey in 1998 CWG. Four years later, Malaysia also showed its upward swing, upsetting the applecart of India at KL in the 10th World Cup. India lost to Malaysia at KL World Cup. With that the 'invincibility of India' had gone from the psyche of Malaysia, which is always a mix side with ethnic Indians.
