Sports Hostel, SCR triumph in ‘Babu’ hockey

Sports Hostel, Lucknow defeated Eastern Railway, Kolkata 5-2 while South Central Railway (SCR), Secunderabad defeated RCF Kapoorthala 3-2 in their respective matches of the 32nd All India KD Singh ‘Babu’ memorial hockey tournament, at Dhyan Chand stadium, Lucknow on Thursday.

Sports Hostel team exercised a slight upper hand over Eastern Railway from the very onset of the match. Shrish Bisen scored a well-timed goal in the 3rd minute to put the hosts in a 1-0 lead. Though S Alam struck the equaliser in the 9th minute but thereafter Hostel players Imran Khan-II (18th minute) and Sangam Singh (30th minute) netted apiece each to make the half-time score 3-1 in favour of the victors.

Asheesh Singh Sengar made no mistake in utilising a penalty-corner awarded to the Railway team in the 46th minute and scored a goal. But thereafter, Hostel players Imran Khan (66th minute) and Chandan Singh (67th minute, through penalty stroke) sounded the boards to ensure a 5-2 win for their team.

The match between SCR Secunderabad and RCF Kapoorthala was a keenly-contested one in which the former triumphed 3-2. SCR player G Singh broke the ice through a penalty-corner awarded to his team in the 5th minute. Soon after, the onset of the second-half, Simrandeep Singh struck the equaliser through a penalty-stroke opportunity. Mayank James put SCR in lead again with a well-timed goal in the 44th minute. However, Manish Rana levelled the scores in the 48th minute. Playing with good vision, SCR forward Mandeep Singh scored a goal in the 68th minute ensure a 3-2 win for his team.

Friday’s Fixtures: SBI Bhopal vs West Central Railway, Jabalpur (at 1.00 pm); DLW Varanasi vs Rajasthan Eleven, Ajmer (at 3.00 pm).

Inter-office badminton

The district ‘Inter Office, Team & Open Badminton Championship’ will be organised by Medical Directorate of Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) from February 10 to 12.

On the last day of the tournament, an exhibition match between the winner’s of the tournament and members of the Indian deaf badminton team will also be organised.
