Ailing Olympian Mohammad Shahid is still in Intensive Care Unit of India’s top most medical facility, Medanta, where he is admitted two days ago.
Md. Shahid, a resident of Varanasi, a historic town about 300 east of Delhi, was suffering from bouts of Jaundice last 2,3 months, and it aggravated last week.
The Sports Officer with DLW, North Eastern Railways, was admitted to local Varanasi’s Banares Hindu University hospital last week.
After sudden swelling of stomach, besides collection of fluid in both legs, the doctors there advised immediate airlift to Delhi’s Medanta.
The liver problem aggravated, necessitating talk of liver transplant.
Randhir Sood, the renowned specialist on Liver Transplant, is attending to the Padamshree awardee Md. Shahid.
Visitors were not allowed to meet the ailing Olympians, with only family members given permission.
Md. Shahid’s son and daughter, besides mother and a couple of close relatives are staying in Gurgaon, a suburb of Delhi, to attend to they dearest.
Md. Shahid has a son and daughter, the former doing third year Commerce under-graduation while daughter is employed in Delhi.
Indian Railways, employer of the living legend, woke up quickly to extend financial help, of course bowing the social media pressing.
It is reliably learnt the hospital authorities were instructed not to charge from the family of Md. Shahid, instead the organization will reimburse all the expenses, to the tune of Rs.10 lacs.
Earlier on the first day of Shahid’s admission itself, Hockey India President offered free medical treatment for Shahid in Delhi in his family owned Batra Group of Hospital, where 8 years ago Jugraj Singh was treated.
However, considering the liver specialists prowess in the Medanta, the family preferred BHU’ doctors’ advice of present place, which the HI had gracefully accepted.
Shahid’s wife, whom the write met today in the Medanta hospital premises, expressed satisfaction that the expenses part is taken care of.
Medanta is five-star like super speciality hospital, headed by world renowned heart surgeon Naresh Trehan.
Today, Sanjay Singh, General Secretary of Aam Aadmi Party, which rules Delhi, visited the hospital and made enquiries with Dr. Trehan.
Yesterday, Olympians Zafar Iqbal and MM Kaushik, also the Moscow Olympics gold medallist as that Shahid, made visits to the hospital.
Later in the day, Rajyavarthan Singh Rathore, Olympic Silver Medallist, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting also visited.
However, Jaundice driven side effects continue to taunt the legend. The kidneys almost failed, leading to dialysis process put in operation.
Md. Shahid’s son said that the doctors will be able to take conclusive decision on the status of kidneys after 2,3 trips of dialysis.

Meanwhile Dhanraj Pillay, who considers Shahid as his role model, appealed for financial support.
Today, sitting Member of Parliament, Padamshree Dilip Tirkey, appealed to Anurag Thakur, president of BCCI, and also Himachal Hockey, for financial support.
Reports suggest Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports have taken note of the developments and responded favourably in social media.
I assure all those concerned that Shahid, unlike Dhyan Chand Days, is getting the best available medical care as of now. His family and relatives, numbering seven, are camping in Delhi to attend to him.
What we all Indians need to do at this time is to pray for his speedy recovery.
