The Commerce graduate from MKK college, Mumbai, represented his city in both 1997 and 1999 Junior Nationals; and Tata Sports Club and Air India in the 1999 and 2000 Sr. Nationals before joining the then newly formed Indian Oil Corporation.

The sixth senior most in the Monchengladbach World Cup team, Viren made his maiden tour abroad in 1999 as a part of India's Under – 20’s Europe tour. Three Poznan Challenge Cups (India A) and 11 matches for juniors later, he won the Gold at the Hobart Junior World Cup. He  made his senior spurs in the 2002 HA Challenge Cup under coach Rajinder Singh Sr.

Since then had become part of all Indian teams till 2006 Pakistan Series. Recalled soon for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and World Cups. He missed out the 2006 Asian Games. He has since announced retirement from international hockey. Excellent tackler and motivator received Arjuna award in 2006. Led Marata Warriors in the pathbreaking PHL.

Excellent in studies, got selected for the prestigious Indian School of Business (Hyderabad). He is presently Director of Olympic Gold Quest, a not-for-profit organization that promotes needy Indian athletes.

Recently in early 2020, he came out with a #Let'StickTogether project in collaboration with OGQ and GoSPORTS Foundation to help COVID-19 affected grassroot hockey players. He has thus offered financial assistance of Rs.10,000 to each to 220 needy hockey families.
