Youngest son of a BHU employee, Nitin Kumar learnt his initial hockey in the SAI Sports Hostels at Nainital (Uttaranchal) and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) before selected for prestigious Air India Academy in Delhi. After representing home state UP in Junior Nationals and School Games, joined IOC as an officer. Played his first Senior Nationals for IOC at Jammu. Was part of Junior teams that played in the Karachi 4-Nation and Lahore 6-Nation before playing a stellar role in India’s Jr. Asia Cup success at Karachi. Led a development team to Australia under coach Ramandeep Singh in 2004. Made his senior colours during the France Test series held in Delhi at the fag end of 2004. had a good outing in the 2005 Jr. World Cup. Played a season for Eindovan in The Netherlands along with Sandeep Singh and V. Raja.
Coach V. Baskaran took him for the 2006 World Cup after which he could not get into the national team.
