A product of Jalandhar-based Punjab & Sind Bank Academy, Kanwalpreet joined high profile Punjab Police in 2001. He made his maiden trip abroad for the 2000 Jr. Asia Cup. Coach Cedric D’Souza gave him his senior spurs in the New Zealand Test series same year.

Kanwalpreet ably filled the vacuum created by the injury of Lajrus Barla at the Madrid World Cup Qualifier. He scored the winner against The Netherlands at the Hobart World Cup. He was under study of Dilip Tirkey and Jugraj Singh for a considerable period before making a name for himself.

Kanwalpreet was surprisingly dropped for the Athens Olympics by German coach Gerard Rach. He has hit a bad batch since then, leading to suspension for on-field violence in December 2004. It was revoked at the request of coach Rajinder Jr. who took him to the Mini-World Cup in Amstelveen in 2005. He played the World Cup and Asian Games in 2006.

Not in the national team since then, as he was again banned after 2007-8 Premier Hockey League.
