Amritsar has been the most neglected city, despite being a tourist place, Amritsar lacks basic infrastructure — bad roads, chaotic traffic, and poor sewerage system.
Before Partition, Amritsar was an important business centre, but now the industry has been completely wiped out due to militancy and lack of development. Also, nobody is bothered about preserving the rich heritage and culture of the city.
Dr R.S. Bawa, GNDU Registrar I am not satisfied with the progress of our city in these 61 years of Independence.
There is no discipline, whatever development has been done, it is not in a planned and systematic manner. We still lack basic amenities.
Quality of life is poor and surroundings are unhygien ic. Overall, the progress is negligible.
Yash Mehra, Cardiologist Amritsar has progressed in terms of construction of buildings only . We have got a number of new schools and nursing homes in past 60, but that is not the only yardstick of progress. If we see in totality, Amritsar has not progressed much. The condition of roads is pathetic and there is no garbage management system in the city . Besides, we have failed to maintain parks and green belts.
Jasmeet Nayar, S.R. Government College principal Development of Amritsar has been on a downhill. Instead of progressing in these 61 years, the condition has gone from bad to worse.
It has now become a city of marriage palaces and an encroacher’s paradise. Condition of roads is miserable and traffic is a mess. There is no law and order, besides city is defaced by hoardings and obnoxious posters. The textile industry of has almost vanished, while we have failed to preserve the city’s rich heritage. Even in sports, Amritsar is losing.
Brij Bedi, Social activist Sixty years is a long period and there is no doubt that Amritsar has progressed.
There are better housing colonies and markets now.
So many malls and international food chains have come in the city . Besides, the standard and number of educational institutes has increased. I am sure that it would soon become the number one city of Punjab.
