Giant of a player, Bangaluru's Sabu Varkey, an inside-forward, was born on 21st Jan. 1973. The gentle soul made his senior international debut at the historic South Africa Series in 1993. He played for Bharat Petroleum hockey team in the domestic circuit. He had his learning under the tutelage of Dhyan Chand award winner PA Raphel at the Sports Authority of India training centre in Bangalore. He played in the Indian domestic circuit for about two decades, a record. He is a double World Cup player (1994 & 2002)
