Varinder Singh: One of the pillars of the Indian half-line in the 1970s, Varinder Singh was born on 16th May 1946 at village Dhainowali near Jalandhar. He made his senior India debut at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where India won bronze. Compared to the rest of his team members at Munich, Varinder was a late-bloomer, coming into the Indian side when he was 26 while most of the others were in their early 20s and already had international experience. However, he lost no time in making up for the lost time and since his debut, was rarely left out of the Indian squad till be quit playing.  After the 1972 Olympics, Varinder was part of every major tournament that India played, right up to 1980. These included the 1973 World Cup (silver), 1974 Tehran Asian Games (silver), 1975 World Cup (gold), 1976 Olympics, 1976 Rene Frank trophy (gold), 1978 Bangkok Asian Games (silver), 1978 World Cup and the 1980 Pre-Olympics (joint winners). He played his last match against Russia in the Pre-Olympics final before calling it quits from the international scene. At the national level, he worked with Northern Railways as a Grade A officer and played 15 National Championships for them. Under his captaincy, the team won four titles in a row (1974-1977). He considers the match against Germany at the 1975 World Cup as his best.  Having retired from Railways a few years back, he is now working with Punjab Sports department and looking after their women’s hockey, mainly at junior level.
