Born on  16th Aug.1959, Joaquim Martin Carvalho played hockey for both St.Andrew's High School and Khalsa College, Mumbai. The talented midfielder represented India at all major tournaments including Olympics at Los Angeles (1984). He captained India at the Indira Gandhi Memorial International Gold Cup. He was awarded Arjuna in 1986. He was also one of the successful Indian coaches, having led India to gold at the Asia Cup 2007.
