Balbir Singh Junior

Born on May 2, 1932 at Sansarpur (Jalandhar), Balbir Singh Junior was a player par excellence. He studied at Lyallpur Khalsa College in Jalandhar when selected for the Afghanistan tour in 1951. He played for Punjab state hockey team in the 1951 & 1952 National Championships. He was also part of the Punjab team that won the Dhyan Chand Cup at Delhi in 1953-54.
He also captained Punjab University team which won the inter-university title at Sagar. His other illustrious team-mates were Balkishan Singh, Prithipal Singh, Charles Stephen and Kulwant Arora, all went on to become Olympians later.
He joined the Indian Railways spurning the offer of Punjab Police, whom he represented Railways' tours to various European countries (Czechoslovakia, Spain, Switzerland and Italy, the Netherlands). He was instrumental in the Indian Railways winning National Hockey Championship for three consecutive years in 1957-1959.
He joined the Army in 1962, and played for the Services hockey team at the Nationals. While in the Army he played test matches against the visiting Kenyan Team.
Balbir Singh (Jr) retired as a Major in 1984 and was now settled in Chandigarh and took interest in golf.
He died on 12th April 2021.
