MAYFLOWER SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL, S.J.S. AVENUE, AJNALA ROAD, AMRITSAR
Arise, awake and not stop till the goal is achieved. By taking this motto in mind S. Randhir Singh Sekhon, Retd. Deputy District Education Officer, Amritsar aid the foundation stone of Mayflower Senior Secondary School in 1990. The school is one of the best educational institutions in Amritsar — progressing by leaps and bounds not only in academics but also in sports.
The mayflower School is managed ably by the capable administration of it’s Director S. Randhir Singh Sekhon, the Principal Dr (Mrs.) Paramjit Kaur Sekhon and the Chief Coordinator S. Darshan Singh Walia.
It is a Co- Ed. School. The students from city and far and wide villages come to this school. The school is affiliated to Punjab State Education Board, Mohali up to +2 with three streams –Humanities, Commerce and Science. The school has well qualified faculty. They try every nerve teach the students in simple, easy and effective ways.
In addition to academics, students also take part in extra-Curricular activities like debate, science fairs, singing , painting and not the least, sports. The achievements of the students in these areas are tremendous, be it is academic or sports . The students also compete in Yoga, Karate, Gymnastic at national level.
Poets said: “ The woods are lovely dark and deep but I have promises to keep, Miles to go before I sleep, Miles to go before I sleep “ This fits to our mentor Sekhon. His dream is to rejuvenate the dying spirit of our national game Hockey. So he invited Prof. Paramjit Singh Randhawa, a hockey propagator. He has been making genuine efforts to inculcate the culture of hockey in schools, and with fantastic results to boot. He also dreams of Hockey Academies in school premises.
Hockey is our national game but it is a pity that hockey is losing its shining glory day by day and is going towards abysmal levels. Nowadays parents are hardly interested their ward play hockey. Their only dream, it seems is their child taking up and excelling in cricket to become a Sachin Tendulkar or Harbajan Singh. The day is not far when Hockey become the thing of past and its name only find in text books of school curriculum. However, Prof Randhawa , who is working day and night for the promotion of Hockey without any personal gains, has been making tremendous progress in his mission of more schools more hockey at least now onwards.
Prof. Randhawa while interacting with the Mayflowerians’ in the morning assembly motivated and guided the young talent to adopt this National Game so that once again Hockey may achieve the pinnacle of glory. Each and every word of the speech of Prof. Randhawa put an indelible mark on the brains of the young students who were promptly ready to register their names for Hockey Academy .He also emphasized that our National Sport Hockey must be promoted seriously. He wanted the children to be enthused with the spirit of “ Chak De India’ . The song from the movie was played and the students started “Bangra”. And the atmosphere was so charged that even the tiny tots started tapping their feet.
Prof.Randhawa also conveyed a message to the students of higher classes to put stickers of Chak De India on their bikes rather than putting other stickers. The coming generations can bring big changes in the society and if they will join hands for the promotion of this game , the day is not far way when again Hockey become the pride of the nation. Then in the real term “Chak De India” serves its purpose. He urged all the youngsters present there to channelize their energy and acquire winning elements like unwavering focus, ever soaring passion and undying persistence to emerge as a real winner in this competitive scenario .
S. R.S. Sekhon, Director, Mayflower School, thanked Prof. Randhawa for his great mission, hard work and dedication for the promotion of National Game, thy name Hockey.
Just saw this section. Its wonderful schools take interest. I feel students need to take up hockey, not necessarily to bring back the laurels, but also as a recreational outlet. hockey is always fun. My school St.Joseph in Vellore had a wonderful team in the 80s. I don’t know now. Lot of other school boys used to come and saw us playing. I wish the schools in Amritsar too play between them, so that even non-players will be enthused. Hockey is a wonderful game, i will tell u all. Best wishes
