Annamalai makes it to the semifinal
Perhaps in a decade the Annamalai university’s hockey team is making a wave in the ongoing SAIL-m Nehru Champions Colleges Cup at Gwalior.
The team from Southern part of the country won the sudden death ordeal against the traditionally strong team Lyallpur Khals College, Jalandhar, 5- 4 after two teams tied 2-2 at the end of regulation time in the quarterfinals played at the Railways Stadium, Gwalior. .
Ramesh and Mahesh scored in the tie-break after that G Gnavel in the sudden death for the winning side while Kamaldeep Singh (jr.) and Rahul Bhardway were successful for the losing team in the tie-break, and all the three failed in the sudden death.
However, other team from Jalandhar – DAV College – made the grade with a disappointing defeat of local outfit LNUPE, Gwalior. The Jalandhar team scored four times while the local team answered nil.
Two other quarterfinals also went the predicted way. Gurukul Knagri Unversity, Haridwar, defeated JN PG College, Bhopal via golden goal The all important goals was scored by Sachin Kumar in the 73rd minute. Earlier the team tied at 1-1 after 70 minutes of play.
The last team to make it to the semis was Municipal college, Rourkela. IT defeated MG Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi, in a cruelling sudden death duel. The full time score was 2-2
The semifinal line up:
DAV will take on Annamalai at 13 hrs while Kangri team will engage Rourkela outfit two hours later.
The final will be played on Saturday.
