Pune: The New Year may have brought cheer for many of us but nothing has changed for former India goalkeeper Baljit Singh. The hockey custodian’s story remains the same — of an unfortunate accident and a prolonged story of neglect.

After he had a grievous injury to his right eye during the camp in Pune last year, Singh was sent to the US for treatment. He was called back by the authorities shortly afterwards with a promise of further therapy in India.

But as they say, promises are meant to be broken. Singh has not been getting the money for his treatment and is forced to pay the expenses from his pocket.

“I was called back to India. They promised that I’ll be treated here. Since then I have not heard anything from them. I am on my own,” Baljit told DNA from Chandigarh.

“I have to visit a doctor in Delhi and I am bearing the cost of the treatment — medical expenses, doctor’s fees and travelling charges. They claimed that they will take care of my treatment but I am not getting any help from them,” he added. Baljit accused Hockey India of ignoring him.
