MUMBAI: Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) advanced to the semifinals of the 9th all-India Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup hockey tournament, sponsored by Punjab & Maharashtra Co-op Bank Ltd., played at the Mahindra Stadium.
ONGC edged out Namdhari XI 2-1 and IOC steamrollered Western Railway 5-1 in the league games in Group ‘A’.
ONGC defence, manned by captain Harpal Singh and supported by goalkeeper Dinesh Ekka, kept the Namdhari XI forwards at bay.
Karamjeet Singh finished off a move between Sandeep Antil and Jagwant Singh for the first goal and Jayanta converted a short corner for the second.
Gurpreet Singh’s direct short corner effort helped Namdhari reduce the margin.
