India produced a scintillating display of attacking hockey and penalty-corner efficiency to crush Chile 6-0 in the semifinal of the FIH Nations Cup, booking a place in the title clash with one of their most complete performances of the tournament.
The Indian women seized control from the outset and never allowed Chile a foothold in the contest, combining relentless pressure, clinical finishing and remarkable accuracy from penalty corners to register a comprehensive victory.
The breakthrough came as early as the sixth minute when forward Naveet Kaur converted a penalty corner to hand India a 1-0 lead. The goal settled Indian nerves and opened the floodgates. Seven minutes later, Naveet struck again, this time from open play, finishing a well-worked move in the 13th minute to double the advantage.
Before Chile could recover from that setback, India struck twice more in the space of four minutes. Drag-flick specialist Deepika converted a penalty corner in the 14th minute and repeated the feat in the 18th minute, taking India’s tally to 4-0 and effectively putting the contest beyond the South Americans before the end of the first quarter.
The four-goal burst highlighted India’s dominance in all departments. The midfield dictated possession, the forwards constantly penetrated the Chilean circle and the defensive unit ensured that goalkeeper Savita had a largely comfortable evening.
India continued to press after the interval and maintained the same intensity despite their commanding lead. Their superior structure and movement kept Chile pinned inside their own half for long periods.
The fifth goal arrived in the 32nd minute when experienced midfielder Neha Goyal converted another penalty corner. It was India’s fourth successful penalty-corner conversion of the match and underlined a facet that has become increasingly potent during the tournament.
India earned seven penalty corners in the match and converted four of them, an impressive success rate that reflected both technical precision and tactical acumen. The injection, stopping and finishing unit functioned flawlessly, while the variations employed by the Indian camp repeatedly caught the Chilean defence off guard.
The scoring was completed in the 39th minute by Rituja Pisal, who found the net from open play to make it 6-0 and cap a memorable evening for the Indian side.
While the six goals will grab the headlines, India’s overall performance was equally noteworthy. Their pressing game forced errors, their passing was crisp and purposeful, and their transitions from defence to attack were executed with speed and clarity. Chile, who had impressed en route to the semifinals, found no answer to India’s sustained pressure.
The emphatic victory sends India into the FIH Nations Cup final brimming with confidence. More importantly, it showcased a team peaking at the right time, with multiple goal-scorers contributing and the penalty-corner unit delivering when it mattered most.
If India can replicate this blend of attacking flair, defensive discipline and penalty-corner efficiency in the final, they will be strong favourites to lift the coveted trophy.
