PIL for betterment of hockey

Mumbai: The grievances of national hockey players have finally made it to court. After the uproar by the national players over the discriminatory treatment given to them compared to other sports persons and especially cricketers, a Pune based NGO has filed a PIL in Bombay High Court.

Association for Aiding Justice, through their authorised signatory advocate Ahmed Peerzade has filed a PIL saying proper basic facilities for training the sportsperson from the different sports streams be provided. The PIL which has made the Central government, Maharashtra government through Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Indian Hockey Association (Hockey India) and Maharashtra Hockey Association as respondents, says that these bodies be asked to provide equal treatment to allsports.

The petitioners seek that the government should be directed to set up a special committee to monitor and frame schemes to improve facilities to other sports, said their advocate Dipesh Siroya. “Our aim to file this PIL is to highlight and remove the difference with which ‘sports other than Cricket’ are dealt with,” said Siroya.
