No need for video as England beat Germany
NOTTINGHAM, England: Three weeks after England’s footballers slumped to a World Cup defeat by Germany, the country’s women’s hockey team rescued some national pride on Sunday by beating their old rivals.
England came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 and take the bronze medal at the Champions Trophy, their first ever medal in the tournament’s history.
Germany led through Maike Stoeckel but Susie Gilbert equalised with a tap-in before Crista Cullen’s winning penalty corner.
“It’s amazing and the girls thoroughly deserve it for the work they put in over the week — it’s no fluke,” England captain Kate Walsh said.
“I’m so proud of the girls, going down 1-0 was really tough but we fought, we came back, and it was a fantastic performance.”
Earlier in the tournament, the two sides’ group match had been overshadowed by a bitter dispute over a video referral that went in favour of England.
Ironically, it was a lack of technology that had dented England’s footballers’ hopes in their 4-1 World Cup last 16 defeat by Germany, when Frank Lampard’s shot was ruled out despite the ball having crossed the goal-line.
