England launch bid for 2014 Hockey World Cup
LONDON: The England Hockey Board has launched its bid to host the men’s and women’s field hockey World Cups in London in 2014.
If the bid is successful, they will be the first international events to be held at the legacy facility at the site of London’s Olympic Park, which will be renamed Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park after the 2012 Games.
London Mayor Boris Johnson says on Tuesday the bid is “impeccable” and is “one of the ways in which we are going to turn the Olympic Park into a fantastic sporting legacy.”
UK Sport and Events for London will inject close to 1.5 million pounds ($2.4 million) should the bid be successful. Funding will also be provided by boxing promoter Frank Warren.
It will be only the second time the two tournaments are held simultaneously.
