South India women’s hockey tourney begins

TIRUPATI: Andhra Pradesh trounced Puducherry by 10-0 in the inaugural match of the 5th South India Women’s Hockey Tournament 2011 that began at SV Arts College grounds here on Wednesday. In the second match, Karnataka beat Tamil Nadu by 4 goals to none.

The four-day event is being jointly conducted by Andhra Women’s Hockey Association (AWHA) and Sibar Sports and Cultural Academy. Janaki Arunkumar, Commissioner of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax (Tirupati), inaugurated the tourney.

She also greeted all the players of the inaugural match. R.Gurunathan, Additional Commissioner, Naren of Amway International and Madhu Pratap of Sibar Auto Parts, AWHA organising secretary A.P.K. Reddy and AHA Vice-President A.J.Prasad took part.

Closing ceremony

TTD Executive Officer I.Y.R. Krishna Rao and Andhra Hockey Association (AHA) president Govardhan Reddy will take part in the closing ceremony.

A zonal-level body-building championship will be conducted on Saturday for the ‘Mr.Rayalaseema’ title, which will be formally launched by TTD’s Joint Executive Officer K. Bhaskar and Deputy Director of Enforcement Directorate N.Sridhar.
