Last surviving Olympics hockey gold winner of 1936 passes away
Joseph ‘Joe’ Galibardy, member of the 1936 Olympic gold-winning team under the legendary Dhyan Chand, died in London last month, with Indian hockey authorities in complete oblivious of his demise.
The funeral of Galibardy, who was the oldest living Olympic hockey gold medal-winner before his death on May 19, was held in London on Tuesday.
He emig
rated to England in 1956 with his parents and seven children and lived at the London suburb of Walthamstow where he died at the age of 96.
A specialist left-half, Galibardy played in the 1936 Olympics hockey final against Germany which India won 8-1.
He was the last surviving member of the Indian team that played in the 1936 Olympics.
