Sandeep aims to become a complete player
Sandeep Singh’s quest to become a complete player is on. The penalty corner expert has been able to practise his craft successfully since his international debut in 2004 and wishes to emerge as a solid defender.
An integral part of the Indian hockey team, which is on a mission to win the Olympic qualifier, Sandeep is ready to face any challenge that comes his way.
“I have become better (in my defence) than what I was three-four years ago. It has become possible due to the support of the coaches and teammates. My aim is to become a complete player,” said Sandeep following a training session of the Indian team at the National Stadium here on Tuesday.
Sandeep said the defenders had gained after spending some sessions with former captain Dilip Tirkey. “He has good knowledge of present day hockey. He gives us tips on how to stop counterattacks and how to react to different situations. We are doing some defence drills.”
The Shahabad player appreciated chief coach Michael Nobbs’s stress on fitness. “Recently, we have come from behind to win several matches. Apart from tactical aspects of the game, this has become possible due to our improved fitness level which has helped us sustain for 70 minutes. Trainer David John has made a big contribution towards this.”
It is on rare occasions that India selects three drag-flickers in the backline. “It is special to have three flickers in the team. That means at least one flicker will be there on the pitch all the time.
“It gives us the maximum chance to convert penalty corners,” said Sandeep, who will turn 26 later this month.
Sandeep, who has added variations to his drag-flicks over the years (under the guidance of Jugraj Singh and Clarence Lobo) to maintain his status as the best penalty corner expert of the country, expressed confidence about the team’s short-corner conversion skills.
