New Delhi, 13 Jan 2014: World Champions Australia gave a 6-1 drubbing to Argentina, who were sitting pretty with two wins the pool B of the Hero Hockey World League at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium here on Monday.

Australia began with a bang scoring in the very third minute when an unmarked Daniel Beale sent in a powerful backhander to the top of the net. A few minutes later, skipper Mark Knowles made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-0 converting the penalty stroke. Three minutes later, the Kookas continued the onslaught with a third goal from Kieran Govers to take the match away from the South Americans with a 3-0 lead.

Towards the end of the first session, Argentina pulled one back in the 32nd minute through a field goal from Facundo Callioni, who received a short pass from Lucas Villa and banged into the boards on his reverse stick.

But the Aussies increased the tally within minutes scoring seconds before the cross-over when Kieran Govers struck his second field goal of the match.

In the second session, Russell Ford scored a stunning field goal in the 44th minute before Jason Wilson made rounded it off to 6-1 in the 48h minute.

However, coach Ric Charlesworth will be very unhappy with the team who were able to convert only one of the six short corners they forced.

Ends.
