Bangalore: St Joseph’s Boys’ High School set up a title clash with Bishop Cotton Boys’ School in the Centenary hockey tournament for seniors with a commanding 4-0 semifinal victory over St Germain High School here on Friday.
It was Josephites who called the shots in the second semifinal. Abhay S fired the first salvo in the seventh minute for the winners while Karthik M doubled the tally moments later with a 12th-minute goal.
Germain’s hope of making it into the title round received a further setback after the breather when Karthik netted his second goal of the day (47th) to make it 3-0. More misery was in store when Neil D’Souza rounded off the scoring with a set-piece conversion two minutes away from the final hooter as Josephites booked a berth in the final slated on Saturday.
Josephites are well in line for a double as their ‘A’ team too made it to the finals of the Fr Eric Vaz Memorial tournament for juniors held simultaneously at the same venue.
In the second semifinal, Josephites edged out a fighting Sarla Birla Academy 3-2 to advance into the title round where they will meet Baldwin Boys’ High School on Saturday.
Sarla Birla Academy took a lead as early as in the third minute to put the onus on Josephites.
However, St Joseph’s found the equaliser in the 20th minute through captain Shreyas Somanna as the teams went into the break with honours even. Three minutes into the second session, Brendon D’Souza pumped in a crucial penalty corner goal for Josephites to make it 2-1 while Sandeep Arasappa consolidated the position with another strike five minutes later.
