Saturday, January 02, 2010: Bombay Engineering Group (BEG) & Central Railway registered identical wins in the opening day of 9th All India Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup Hockey Tournament 2010 organized by MHA Ltd played at the Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate.

BEG edged out Mumbai Customs via tie breaker as both sides were at level terms ( 1-1) during regulation time, the final score was 5-3. After the shoot out I favour of BEG by virtue of which BEG matched into the 2nd round meeting Western Railway. Coming to the match BEG stunned Customs by taking the initial lead in the 20th minutes. Rohit Dung Dung brilliantly scooped into the nets from close range a superb pass unleashed by skipper Niranjan Ekka from the 25 yeards . Thereafter the stunned Customs geared up and launched attacks on BEG citadel for the much needed equalizer. However Customs were successful their defender Sandeep converted a direct penalty corner just minute before the half way hooter (1-1)

After resumption both sides were tied up at same score of 1-1, both sides failed to disturb the scorers whatsoever in the breaker BEG held the upperhand while Customs player missed 2 strokes. Scorers for BEG: Rohit Dung Dung ( 2) Ashish Sridokar , Ashish Kerketta , Nirajan Eakk scored one each and for Customs Sandeep ( 2 goals ) and Narad Bahadur ( 1) were on target.

In the another match Central Railway overcame gritty RCF via sudden death as both sides failed to disturb the scorers during regulation period ( 0-0 ) However the deadlock was not broken in the tie-breaker too but in sudden death Central Rly converted all strokes while RCF’s Solomon Alexander’s try was brilliantly saved by Central Rly keeper Herojit Singh which enabled Central Rly to go into the league stage.

Scorers for Central Rly: Akhilesh Singh, Nilesh Mane, Avesh Ansari, Navneet Swarnakar and Amit Singh, in sudden death Avesh Ansari scored , for RCF – Solomon Alexander, P.Kumar, Shiv Deep, Laxman Rao, Mahesh Bagade while S.Alexander missed out.

Today, Western Railways will take on BEG.
