New Delhi, 11 Jan 2014: Fortunes fluctuated as Belgium took the lead twice but were at the receiving end once again losing a close match to Argentina for their second defeat in the Hero World League Final here on Satuday.
Argentina rallied twice to pip Belgium 3-2. Belgium who lost to the Australia are yet to open their account while Argentina who upset the Netherlands on the opening day have six points after two pool matches.
It is interesting to note that this is the first match where all the goals were field goals. For the record Belgium earned one penalty corner to two by Argentina but all them failed to yield any goal. In the very first minute Facundo Callioni forced a short corner but Argentina could not convert it. One more went in vain in the 29th minute for Argentina while the Red Lions wasted one short corner as the half-time whistle went through.
It was Belgium who drew the first blood in the 6th minute through Tom Boon and were in a good position to make it 2-0 when Simon Gougnard received a long diagonal cross from the right flank but his powerful shot was warded off by Argentine goal keeper Juan Vivaldi. Argentine mounted an immediate counter but could not get it right at the all-important end.
However, within a minute, Argentina restored parity when Pedr Ibarra stuck after dribbling past a host of defenders and sent in a fierce reverse stick ball past Belgium goalie Vincent. Boon added one more goal a minute before the break.
Midway through the second session, Argentina leveled the score to 2-2 when an opportunistic Matias Paredes deflected a long cross from Guido Barreiros at the far post in the 50th minute.
Towards the end, Argentina found the match winner through Facundo Callioni, who scooped to the top of the net with 9 minutes left on the clock.
After a rest day on Sunday, Belgium will take on the Netherlands while Argentina will play Australia on Monday.
