Brojen Singh Gives India a Moment to Savour

India wins the Third Akhbar El Yom Invitational Hockey Tournament

This is first Cup Victory for India in the new year, nay, new millennium.

Winning all the league matches, India won the Cup, beating the host Egypt 2-1 in the final today. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the regulation time. Indian Airlines’Brojen Singh, who earlier posted the first goal, scored again in the extra-time to give India a much needed moment of victory.

India was in the final of the same tournament in 1999 too, but lost the crown by a whiskar to the host.

It is a great effort from the Manipur lad Brojen, who made a hat-trick of goals in his debut match against Malaysia in the Chief Minister’s Cup in 1996. He was also declared best forward of the recent Jammu National Championship.

India participated in the annual tournament in the last two years too. In 1999, India finished second losing the final to the same Egypt at 3-1 on 9th Feb. That time the team was trained by Rajinder Singh, who is also in charge of coaching now. Last year, C.R. Kumar took the team to Cairo and team lost the semi-final to the host Egypt at 2-4 and gained the third position, beating Switzerland 4-1 in the ranking match.

India defeated Kenya 6-0, France 4-2, Belgium 4-0(?) and drew Egypt 4-4 in the league before achieving the encore in the final.

EGYPT TOURNAMENT PROBABLES

India ‘B’ is going to take part in the 6-Nation Tournament to be held in Egypt’ capital Cairo in the fourth week of February,2001. 22 Indian probables are at present undergoing a training camp at Ludhiana(Punjab). The camp commenced on 11th Feb and will conclude on 21st.
