Chandigarh: Star-studded Chandigarh Hockey Association (CHA) XI outplayed Jammu and Kashmir Police 5-1 in a first round match of the 38th SN Vohra’s All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament being organized by Rock Rovers at Sector 42 Hockey Stadium on Monday.
With India captain Sardara Singh leading from the front, CHA outplayed the policemen in all departments of the game. The local outfit were quick to open their account when Vikram Singh scored a field goal in the 14th minute.
However, the policemen put up a brave fight and kept the marauding CHA forwards at bay till the 50th minute before Kamal netted a field goal to make it 2-0.
After wasting penalty corners in the 32nd and 51st minutes, CHA converted their third short corner through Rupinder Singh who pierced the rival defence with an angular shot.
The local outfit maintained their pressure and Suminder Singh dribbled his way into the striking circle before catching the opposition defenders napping in the 62nd minute and scoring the fourth goal. Gurjet rounded of the winners’ tally in the 64th minute with a fine field goal. The visitors scored a consolation goal when Gurjeet converted a penalty corner in the 68th minute.
In the second match played under lights, Border Security Force, Mohali, beat Centre of Excellence, Patiala, 6-4 via tiebreaker. The teams were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time.
It was BSF who drew the first blood in the 7th minute through Joychand Singh who converted a penalty corner. Sarvjit Singh neutralised the lead in the 14th minute with a field goal. Harmant Singh then gave CoE the lead by converting a penalty corner in the 54th minute. In a seesaw battle, the securitymen restored parity in the 68th minute by converting a penalty corner through Ajit Dung Dung.
