Chandigarh: On the third day of the Panjab University Inter-College Hockey (women) Tournament, being played at PU grounds, GGS College, Chandigarh, beat Government College for Women (GCW), Ludhiana, 3-1 while in the second match MCM DAV College defeated Khalsa College, Ludhiana, 4-0.
GCW took the lead in the 9th minute when Dolly converted a penalty corner. But stung by this early setback GGS launched one counter attack after the other and enjoyed virtual ball possession. The unrelenting pressure yielded a penalty stroke for the Chandigarh outfit, which was duly dispatched into the goal by Sapna in the 15th minute to restore parity.
Ten minutes later Mandeep scored a field goal to take GGS 2-1 up. After resumption, GGS totally dominated the proceedings and in the 53rd minute Poonam scored the third goal. MCM had an easy outing against the girls from Ludhiana who put up an insipid display. Sonika of MCM opened the proceedings with a field goal in the 13th minute, while Meenu hammered in two field goals in the 22nd and the 42nd minutes, respectively.
Eleven minutes into the second half Suman of MCM converted a penalty corner to seal the match in their favour.
The second day of the Panjab University Inter-College Volleyball B-Division (women) saw the semifinals being completed. In the first match Guru Nanak College, Moga, trounced MLBG Girls College, Taprian Khurd, 25-5, 25-1, 25-6 while in the second semis, MBB GRGC Girls College, Mansowal, beat Government College, Karamsar, 25-7, 25-12, 25-12.
In cricket, SGGS College, Chandigarh, defeated SCD Government College, Ludhiana, by 4 wickets to reach the finals. Batting first, SCD were bowled out for 147 in 43 overs. Lalit topscored with 44 while Rahil Nanda chipped in with a brisk 25. For SGGS, Ashim and Surinder Singh picked up two wickets each. In reply, SGGS raced past the target in 38.2 overs with 4 wickets in hand. Kunal scored 36 while Rajiv Rishi remained unbeaten on 33. In another semifinal, GGDSD College defeated DAV College, Chandigarh, by 12 runs. Batting first GGDSD scored 150 runs before being bowled out in 45.4 overs. Ishan Dogra scored 43 while S Bhattacharya made 34. Harpreet Chatha was the pick of the DAV bowlers returning with figures of 3 for 20.
In reply, DAV were all out for 138 in 46 overs. Amrinder scored 28 while Michel Vishal made 23. Vineet was the wrecker-in-chief scalping 4 for 14.
