1980:India first met Germany when it played the Champions Trophy for the first time in 1980. It lost the keenly contested match 4-3. Stephan Blocher’s 60th minute goal which gave the West Germans 4-2 lead was curtailed by a solitary reply by Devinder Singh in the 60th min, but draw eluded the team led by Surjit Singh.
1982: Md. Shahid’s 70th minute field goal gave India a fulfilling 3-2 win
1983: It was the first match for both, India could strike only a solitary goal while conceding a goal apiece to Carsten Fishcher and Heomer. India lost 1-2.
1985: It was a classic contest, whose narratives often repeated. India drew 5-5 after trailing 1-5, last four goals coming in the last ten minutes. Joaquim Carvalho’s stroke in the 70th minute.
1986: It was a tournament opener. Indians were whitewashed 0-3.
1989: It was again first match for both giants. But India burst the Germans at their own soils (Berlin). With a goal apiece from Mukesh Kumar, Jude Felix and MP Singh, India overwhelmed the hosts 3-2. The saga of West Germany was over.
1995: It was again in Berlin. Cedric D’Souza’s team was successful in not allowing the Germans to score, so also itself. India 0 Germany 0.
1996: In Chennai, India lost to Germany 1-2 in the opener and then 0-5 in the bronze medal match. Germany was the nemesis of India at home.
2002: It was second match for both; Germany walked away with full points (3-2).
2003: At Rotterdam in The Netherlands, India narrowly Germany 3-2.
2004: Held after the Olympics, Germany chose to send a second string which offered no resistance to India on Pakistan soils. India 3 Germany 0.
2005: Germany had the last laugh in the keenly contested Chennai CT with a 1-0 victory.
2012:In the last Champions Trophy in Melbourne, India met Germany in the last pool match, lost 2-3, still topped the pool on account of better goal difference.
