Comets too good for Marines

By Mihir S Vasavda

Chandigarh Comets swiftly countered any suggestions of weariness from Saturday night’s defeat to Chennai Cheetahs with a terrific display of attacking hockey. They come back from being two goals down to beat Mumbai Marines 4-2 in a World Series Hockey league match at the Mahindra Stadium here on Sunday.

Despite the heroics of skipper Adrian D’Souza under the bars, Mumbai lacked inspiration up front after leading 2-0 (Troy Sutherland 3, Joga Singh 7) early in the first half.

Chandigarh, seeking their first win of the tournament, picked up their first points after an improved second-half performance. They scored through (Sukhvinder Singh 17, 70, Gurjinder Singh 24, 46, Ranjodh Singh 55).

Chandigarh looked a bit lethargic at the back early on. However, they started using the flanks well after coach Harendra Singh called for a time out soon after the second goal. Thereafter, it was all about Chandigarh, who made good use of the possession and made the most of an average Mumbai defence.

Earlier, Deepak Thakur and Prabhjot Singh helped Sher-e-Punjab build a comfortable lead but eventually had to settle for a 3-3 draw with Pune Strykers in Jalandhar.
